When I need images for an application I am writing the simplest and most consistent approach I have found is to use those provided directly by Microsoft. I tend to forget where these are stored and have to go hunting for them. For Visual Studio developers, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\VS2010ImageLibrary\1033 to find the library of common image files. It is a good resource.
